Homemade Bread

There is something extra special about homemade bread. The smell of bread cooking is wonderful.

When you make your own bread, you know exactly what has gone into it! No nasty additives, just pure fresh ingredients.

Homemade bread is a real treat for your vegetarian lunchbox.

If you do not have the time to make your own bread consider a bread maker. Bread makers are really simple to use –all you need to do is measure out the ingredients and set the machine. A few hours later, you will have freshly made bread. You can pre-set the timer to come on in the night and wake up to that smell of freshly cooked bread. Mmmmm heaven!

Basic Loaf Recipe for a Bread Maker

Make sure you read your own bread makers instructions first, they do vary. I have used this recipe in two different bread makers and it has always come out well.

  • 500 g strong bread flour – I use 1/2 wholemeal and 1/2 white flour
  • 7 g fast action yeast (the dried yeast in available in sachets)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 300 ml water
  • All you do is put the oil and water in the bottom of your bread maker’s basket. Add the flour and salt on top. Put the yeast on the very top of the ingredients.

Set your bread maker to either the basic setting or the wholemeal setting (if using wholemeal flour).

Is you wish, you can add various seeds to the mixture e.g. pumpkin or sunflower seeds.

No time to make your own bread?

There are so many choices of breads and wraps now available in the supermarkets. There is really no excuse for using the same type of bread every day!

Here are some of the varieties I found in just one food store:

  • Tortilla wraps (flour, wholemeal and corn varieties)

  • olive bread, sun dried tomato bread,

  • rosemary focaccia, pesto and pine focaccia

  • linseed, sourdough,

  • pitta (plain and wholemeal, mini and large)

  • rye, bagels, naan, soda

  • various seeded breads. The list goes on.....
  • So next time you are shopping pick up something different to try.

Tip Remember you can freeze your bread. If you are buying large loafs - pre-cut into slices and freeze. Wraps also freeze well. That way you can just take out what you need. No more stale sandwiches or wraps!
