Ploughmans Lunch

The ploughmans lunch is proof that a simple meal can taste great. It is commonly found on the lunch menu of many pubs and inns in the UK. Usually washed down with a good glass of beer or cider, what could be better on a summer's day!

In days gone by the ploughman’s wife would have put together some cheese and home baked bread for her husband to eat while he was out ploughing the fields.

This really is a traditional lunchbox meal!

Why not take your own ploughman's to work? You might need to leave out the beer though! But you could try some apple juice or ginger cordial instead.

The traditional ploughman’s consists of:

  • Thick slice of cheese – usually cheddar or stilton
  • (You could use veggie ham slices or veggie pate if you do not eat dairy products).
  • Pickle or chutney and /or picked onions
  • Large hunk of fresh bread
  • The following are often added:

  • Apple
  • Green salad
  • Tomatoes
  • Hard boiled egg
  • Just make sure your bread is really fresh and you use good quality ingredients and you can't go wrong!
